Mixed results for Panthers

UPEI plays quarter-final game at AUS women’s championsh­ip on Friday

The UPEI Panthers closed out the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) women’s basketball regular season on a winning note.

The Panthers won 66-60 over the St. Francis Xavier X-Women in overtime on Saturday in Antigonish, N.S.

UPEI, which is 11-9 (wonlost), is the fourth seed going into the AUS championsh­ips this weekend in Halifax, N.S.

Meanwhile, the UPEI men dropped a 94-93 decision in overtime to the St. Francis Xavier X-Men on Saturday to finish its season.

UPEI finished 6-14, and out of the playoffs.

Women Panthers 66 X-Women 60 (OT)

After trailing for the majority of the game, the Panthers came back in the fourth quarter to tie the game 60-60 at the end of regulation time. UPEI’s defence then held St. F.X. scoreless in the overtime period after only allowing eight points in the fourth quarter.

Kiera Rigby led UPEI with 17 points while Jane McLaughlin grabbed 11 rebounds.

Kimberly Taylor and Jamie McCarron each had 12 points for St. F.X. Taylor had a gamehigh 13 boards.

UPEI rookie Jenna Mae Ellsworth finished the season fifth in AUS scoring at 14.1 points per game.

UPEI now faces fifth-seeded Acadia in a quarter-final matchup on Friday at 1 p.m. The winner tangles with top-seeded Saint Mary’s in the semifinals on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Men X-Men 94 Panthers 93 (OT)

The Panthers were up by 12 points with just over five minutes left in the game, but couldn’t hold the lead as X-Men guard Akil Charles hit four three-point shots and eventually tied the game 85-85 with one second on the clock.

From there, the X-Men outscored UPEI 9-8 in extra time.

Dut Dut led all scorers with 34 points and tied St. F.X.’s Cameron Walker with 12 rebounds. Charles finished with 22 points.

Tyler Scott finished with 15 points and atop the AUS scoring list at 21.5 points per game.
