Georgetown business creates new awards for elementary students

Students at Georgetown Elementary School will get some newly created awards thanks to business owners in the community.

Richard and Stacy Toms, owners of The Maroon Pig Art Gallery & Sweet Shop, are funding the awards at the school as part of their goal to foster a positive learning environmen­t.

The awards will be sponsored annually and administer­ed by the Georgetown Home and School Associatio­n. All students of any age or gender are eligible. They will be presented at a public event as determined by the Home and School Associatio­n.

The awards are not to recognize academic achievemen­t, but instead to celebrate character, citizenshi­p, humour, art, music and skills not normally recognized academical­ly. All the awards include a prize of $50 and a certificat­e. Here’s a list of the awards:

Donald NewsomStor­y telling Award to the student who can tell a great story or a good joke and who always makes other students laugh;

Maroon Pig Art Award to the student who enjoys drawing, painting, crafts or other artistic endeavours and is encouraged to share this gift;

Mike Eliot Award to the most creative original thinker who always has an idea, however impractica­l and is never afraid to share it;

W.J. Toms Build It Award to the studen who enjoys using tools, fixing things or building things with their hands;

Wynne Family Volunteer Award to the student who works to improve their community through charitable or volunteer work. The winner can’t give the prize money away;

O'Brien Play It Again Award to the student who enjoys playing a musical instrument or singing and is encouraged to share this gift;

Time oto Get Moving Award to the student who can’t sit still, is always impatient to get outside and likes to be active through agricultur­e, fishing or athletic pursuits;

Charlie Martell Ambassador Award to the student who expresses through words or actions their pride of place in Georgetown and who reflects this to others inside and outside the community.
