Sluggers beat Cheers
Cheers and the Sluggers meet in all-P.E.I. first round playoff in world masters women’s softball in New Zealand
It seemed destined to happen for the P.E.I. teams and in the end the Subway Sluggers defeated Cheers 11-7 in the playoffs of the World Masters Games softball competition in Auckland, New Zealand.
Both Island squads are competing in the women’s 45-plus recreational division.
Cheers was 5-0 going into the game, while the Sluggers had a 3-2 record.
Tammy Murphy picked up the pitching win, while Ginette Plourde (2-3), Janet Nichols (2-4) and Tracy Arsenault (2-4) led the offence.
The Sluggers scored five ruins in the first inning, but in the bottom of the frame Cheers tallied six runs for a 6-5 lead after one.
However, the Sluggers clawed back in the close game eventually leading 8-7 after three innings. Then Arsenault capped things with a basesloaded triple which cleared the bases and handed the Sluggers an 11-7 lead.
The Sluggers defence held Cheers off the scoresheet in the fourth until the timed game expired.
In Saturday’s action, the Sluggers move on to face the Ottawa Valley Strong in the winners bracket while Cheers tangles with the Western Diamonds in the losers bracket.
