Seeking laypersons

Lay Pastoral Associate Formation Program being offered

-

In keeping with the apostolate of the laity, 12 years ago the Diocese of Charlottetown developed a formation program to help prepare laypersons for parish ministry and the fourth offering of this program will begin in September.

“Laypersons bring their special gifts and talents to the life and well-being of parish communities,” said Bishop Richard Grecco.

“There are many areas such as marriage preparation, outreach to the poor and marginalized, youth and young adult ministry where lay men and women are especially suited to offer effective care and support.”

The lay formation program is two years in duration, consisting of 10 monthly weekends from September to June each year. The formation sessions take place at the Marguerite Bourgeoys Centre in Summerside and are facilitated by Island priests, religious, and lay persons skilled in various areas of study and ministry. Candidates are chosen by their respective parish communities in accordance with the specific pastoral priorities they wish to address.

“Lay people, by virtue of their involvement with the missionary dynamic of parish community can find wonderful fulfilment in various aspects of parish ministry,” said Grecco.

“I would encourage those who might be interested in the program to speak to their pastor. It could be a decision that is transformative, enriching their lives.”

The deadline for the nomination of candidates for the fourth offering of the program is Friday, June 16.

The target is to have at least 12 individuals involved in the program. It is important to note that the program is open to Catholic men, women and couples.
