Campaign continues to preserve Glenaladale estate
Glenaladale Heritage Trust Inc. enjoys visit to Government House, hosted by patron of the group
Dorothy Lewis, patron of the Glenaladale Heritage Trust Inc., recently hosted committee members at Government House in Charlottetown for tea and a private tour.
The Glenaladale Heritage Trust is an Island group endeavouring to preserve the magnificent Glenaladale estate on Tracadie Bay. Lewis, who is the wife of P.E.I. Lt.-Gov. Frank Lewis, graciously accepted the committee’s invitation to act as patron of the Glenaladale Heritage Trust Inc. after touring the property in the fall of 2016.
The 529-acre Glenaladale Estate is an important part of Island history. It was the personal estate of Captain John MacDonald, who brought out the first large Scots settlement in 1772, and whose son Fr. John was active in bringing out many of the Island’s Irish settlers.
In 1884, the current home, a stunning three-storey brick home was commissioned by Sir William Christopher, grandson of Capt. John. Both Capt. John and Sir William Christopher have been recognized a people of National Importance by Parks Canada.
The Glenaladale Estate was purchased by the Mackinnon Family in 1905 and remains in their care to this day.
The Glenaladale Heritage Trust has developed a sustainable phased plan which will see this estate regenerated into an active vibrant year-round centre. The plan recognizes the importance of being good stewards of this unique ecological diverse property. It will highlight the Island’s Scottish roots and pay homage to Island history.
Members of the committee feel the 150th anniversary of Canada is a great opportunity to celebrate a piece of the Island’s heritage and save this precious historic site.
