P.E.I. athletes win numerous gold medals at Atlantic championsh­ips

P.E.I. athletes earned numerous gold medals at the Atlantic gymnastics championsh­ips in Sackville, N.B., during the weekend.

Team P.E.I. was comprised of 68 members – 53 girls and 15 girls – from the Summerside Saultos, Island Gymnastics Academy, Victory Gymnastics and St. Louis Gymnos.

Ben Simpson, Trent MacLure and Matt Gallant produced gold-medal performanc­es in male competitio­ns.

Simpson won gold in allaround as well as on the floor, pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar in the level 1 10-and-under category.

MacLure took gold in level 4 12-and-under while Trent Quinn and Ethan Arsenault claimed silver and bronze.

In the national open division, Gallant captured gold on the rings and a bronze on parallel bars while Ryan McKenna collected silver on floor and was fourth all-around.

P.E.I.’s tyro level 5 female squad earned bronze in the team event.

In the argo level 6 category, Victoria Covey won gold in allaround as well as on the floor. Covey’s teammate Ciara Chaisson took gold on bars while Lily Flanagan earned bronze on beam.

In tyro level 6, Maggie Campbell picked up gold on vault and silver in all-around. Annika Trivers captured gold on the uneven bars, and the tyro level 6 team took bronze.

Grace Potter, on the floor, and the novice level 6 team earned silver medals.

Mackenzie Paton won gold on the beam in open level 6.

In level 7 tyro girls, Lilly Chappell and Lucy Kirby earned silver and bronze on vault while teammate Ella MacDougall earned silver on the beam and floor. P.E.I. also brought home silver in the team competitio­n.

In level 7 novice girls, Shailynn Richard took silver on the beam while, in the open level 7 category, Tanisha Tawill earned gold on bars and teammate Emmy-Mae MacLeod won bronze on floor.

P.E.I.’s open 7 girls picked up silver in the team event as well.

In tyro level 8 girls, Sophie Mayne collected a gold medal on the beam and Kenzie Myers won top honours in vault.

In open level 8, Tori Hogan won gold on vault while Alyssa Mugridge returned home with a bronze on the floor.
