Most ‘LOL’ worthy comedy books

These hilarious books likely aren’t on most people’s book club

- Keely Turner

I have a simple barometer for friendship, television shows and books. Does it make me laugh?

I’ve talked and written endlessly of my obsession with books by Mindy Kaling, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Those are the obvious ones. I wanted to provide you with some undercover hilarious books that aren’t on your book club list, but should be.

“Girl Walks into a Bar” by Rachel Dratch:

Rachel Dratch is most known as a cast member on SNL (Saturday Night Live) from 19992006, but she’s also been on 30 Rock, The King of Queens, Bob’s Burgers, and she wrote my new favourite memoir. I don’t want to overhype this, but it was THE FUNNIEST BOOK OF ALL TIME AND WILL MAKE YOU LAUGH OUT LOUD SO OFTEN AND WITH SUCH VIGOR THAT IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE FOR THE BETTER. Or whatever. “Melki” whose profile picture is a black bear sitting at a picnic table on Good Reads, only rated it 3 stars and said, “Basically a piece of fluff, written by a pretty nice person”. So, whether you love this book like I did, or just find it OK like Melki did, we can all agree that Rachel Dratch is a pretty nice person.

“You’re Not Doing It Right”

by Michael Ian Black:

Michael Ian Black is a comedian, writer, actor, director, poker player and obviously, owner of the world’s longest business card. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but it requires a dark humour that is not easily offended. Michael talks honestly (negatively) about marriage, kids and career. There is boldness, rawness and sort of a sadness about this book – I’m really selling it, right? You’ll laugh, you’ll get introspective, and you’ll feel better about yourself because there’s no way you’re as angry at the world and yourself as the author.

“You’ll Grow Out of It” by Jessi Klein:

This book is INCREDIBLE. It reminds me of a Mindy Kaling book in the way that it is so funny and relatable that I found myself Googling her, scrolling through an embarrassing number of pictures, and wishing I was her friend. A standout part of this book is her comparison of women who are wolves vs women who are poodles. I am a wolf, in case you couldn’t gather that from the fact that I have both Day Sweatpants and Night Sweatpants. Jessi is executive producer and writer on Inside Amy Schumer, she’s worked on Chappelle’s Show, The Showbiz Show with David Spade, and many others. My new fantasy is going to Cabo with her and Amy Schumer.

“Born a Crime” by Trevor Noah:

I’m only including this in my comedic memoirs recommendations because that’s the category Amazon gave it and Amazon is my closest friend and ally. This book definitely

had funny parts (there is a particularly hilarious poop story that instantly comes to mind), but I found it mainly educational and interesting. Trevor has had some of the most insane, horrifying, exciting, traumatic, and mysterious experiences I’ve ever read about. I rarely re-read or rewatch anything, but I would read this book again, and again, and again. I found myself retelling his stories to my boyfriend, my parents, my clients, everyone. You should buy this book and take it to Cabo when we go with Jessi Klein and Amy Schumer.

What are you waiting for? Get reading before the new season of House of Cards drops and we only have brain space for Netflix again.
