-

The first of three concerts in support of the 21st anniversary of the QEH/Eastlink Telethon begins the 16th year of the Murray River Ceilidh Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Murray River Hall.

Special guests are Millie MacDonald and Susan Petrie, who will join the local favourites - Marie MacIntyre and John Hume, Mary Lou MacLure and Walter Ching, Irving and Dorothy Hayter, the MacDonald Sisters (Marie Docherty and Doris MacDonald), Garth Gillis and Donnie MacDonald, Michael O’Connor and more.

They will be joined by Garnet Buell and the Singing Islanders Jim Madsen, Don MacKenzie, Gill Nowlan and Glenda Johnston - for an evening of music and friendship.

In 2016, this small group of volunteers raised more than $20,000 toward their total of $386,100 for the past 15 years. This year, they hope to surpass $400,000.00.

The QEH will be requesting donations from those who have donated through the Murray River Ceilidhs and other events across the Island in past years. The telethon goes on May 27-28.

“We invite donors to once again indicate on their cheque and enclosure form that they wish to support the Murray River and area group with their fund raising goals. All revenue remains with the QEH,” a hospital news release states.

Donations will also be welcomed at the Mother’s Day ceilidh May 13.

The grand finale will be the annual tribute to Porter Wagoner on the telethon weekend. Each donation of $10 plus will receive a temporary receipt and the official receipt will be issued by the QEH at a later date.

As in past years, donations over $100 will be posted on the donor wall for one year, unless the donor wishes otherwise. All public donations are announced on air during the telethon.

Admission is $5 and that includes a 50/50 draw, homemade fudge, Westjet raffle tickets as well as an auction and a social time. All events this year will start at 7 p.m. and Donations towards the lunch and the auction are much appreciated.

For information about this year’s events or to make a donation, call either Garnet or Mary at 902-838-4791 or check out the web site at www.murrayriverceilidhcommittee.com.
