‘Shocked and appalled’

Charlottetown call centre gives no warning in cutting jobs

-

A call centre in Charlottetown has abruptly cut staff with no notification, leaving many to learn about their fate through social media.

Draper Bulger, 37, of Charlottetown had provided technical support with Server Sitters since 2013.

He and many co-workers learned over the weekend that they were out of work.

He had to badger the company’s human resources person for confirmation that his job was terminated.

“Management wouldn’t answer my calls,’’ he says.

“No one would return any messages. That is totally unprofessional… I’m just shocked and appalled.’’

“It just stings,’’ he adds, “that a company that I had put four years of my life into, worked extra hours for, have been loyal to, can just drop me like that... no warning, no official word and no severance.’’ Draper Bulger

Trevor Doucet, 37, of Charlottetown, said he was told his job was terminated because Server Sitters was downsizing.

He estimates the company has let close to 50 people go with 35 to 40 remaining.

Doucet says he is owed more than $1,000 in vacation pay and is also waiting for word on severance pay.

“I am not sure if I am going to get it or not,’’ he says.

His sudden and unexpected job loss has forced him to turn to his parents for some financial assistance.

“I have a wife and two kids, car payment, rent, you name it,’’ he says.

Bulger, too, finds himself in a tight spot.

Like many, he was working from cheque to cheque.

To make matters worse, he fears the company will shortchange him.

“My expectations for pay… I’m not going to get the pay that is owed to me,’’ he says.

“In all honesty, I expect them to do the right thing and pay their employees at least two weeks severance, along with outstanding pay that is owed.’’

“It just stings,’’ he adds, “that a company that I had put four years of my life into, worked extra hours for, have been loyal to, can just drop me like that... no warning, no official word and no severance.’’

The company declined comment.
