The Prince Edward Golf Association is offering camps this summer in an effort to get more girls playing the sport.

Starting in June, five camps will be offered at courses across the province.

The camps will provide instruction for girls of all skill levels, including those who have never played before.

“The goal is to encourage young girls to take up the sport and to make them feel comfortable on a golf course,” said association executive director Ron MacNeill. “Getting more girls playing golf is a high priority for us.”

The camps come after the association noticed there were few, if any, girls playing the sport at tournaments.

It held a camp in August with 27 girls and more on a waiting list to try to encourage more to take up the sport. A look at the Prince Edward Golf Association’s upcoming girls camps:

Avondale Golf Course

June 27 to July 20 Tuesday and Thursday

11 a.m. to noon

Andersons Creek

July 11 to Aug. 3 Tuesday and Thursday

2 to 3 p.m.

This summer’s camps will each offer twice weekly instruction. Local P.G.A. of Canada golf professionals will do the teaching.

“The association has partnered with P.E.I.G.A. member courses across the Island to offer these instructional camps,” McNeill said. “We wanted to be able to provide locations on a regional basis and

are very pleased to be working with local P.G.A. professionals. They have been very supportive.”

The camps are open to girls between the ages of nine and 15 with a limit of 10 per camp. The cost is $20 and registration is through www.peiga.ca. The association can be contacted at peiga@peiga.ca or at 902393-3293.
