Harley was ‘so full of love’

Dog was one of two seized from Rhonda Lea Kerr by humane society

When Alysha Campbell saw Harley it was love at first sight.

Campbell said it was the dog’s big brown eyes that did it.

“It was almost like he looked right into you,” she said.

Harley was one of two dogs seized from Rhonda Lea Kerr in December after they were found tied up and emaciated outside her home.

The P.E.I. Humane Society was only able to have 13-yearold Harley adopted and both dogs were eventually euthanized because of what the court heard was irreversible mental damage.

Campbell, who adopted Harley in March, said he wanted to be around people all the time and wanted attention.

“He was amazing.”

She knew Harley had been malnourished and said he looked better than he would have when first arriving at the humane society, although she could still see his ribs when she adopted him.

“He was extremely food motivated. He loved peanut butter sandwiches,” she said.

Campbell said she was only able to keep Harley for a little more than a week, but she grew attached to the dog because he

would always cuddle up with her whenever he could.

“He was the biggest gentle giant you would ever meet,” she said.

In the end, keeping Harley was too hard with Campbell saying she couldn’t keep him outside and inside he had separation anxiety whenever he was alone.

Campbell said once when Harley was left alone he ate through part of a door and

chewed a doorknob off.

She tried putting him a kennel, but Harley would end up hurting himself trying to get out because he got so worked up when alone.

“I would have kept him in a heartbeat if I could do it with him being safe,” she said.

Campbell said no one would have guessed Harley came from such a bad situation as he did because he was so loving.

She also couldn’t imagine Harley being aggressive, which is one of the reasons given for why he was euthanized after a second adoption.

“With me he was so full of love,” Campbell said.

Harley’s original owner, Kerr, was fined $1,000 and ordered not to own any companion animals for five years after pleading guilty to two counts of causing or allowing a companion animal to be in distress.

She was initially ordered to pay $4,592 to the P.E.I. Humane Society in costs for the care of the dogs, but that amount was later reduced to $2,876.
