Bluefield High School

Congratula­tions to art diploma program student Beth Kirby on winning the senior poetry category of the National Literary Contest of the Royal Canadian Legion.

The Bluefield Library will be holding a fundraiser at Indigo Books in Charlottet­own on Friday from 5:30-9 p.m. Twenty per cent of all sales will go towards the purchase of new library materials.

Grads are reminded to continue to drop by the Student Services centre for updates on scholarshi­ps and bursaries. Grad and prom committees are also starting so listen for announceme­nts and get involved.

2017 Yearbooks are on sale. Cost is $45 prepaid and can be ordered in main office. Yearbooks will be delivered in the first week of June so you can get them signed.

Arts coffee house auditions will be held Wednesday. Please sign up on the sheet posted on the music room door. See Mrs. Blanchard for more details.

Applicatio­ns for the 2017 valedictor­ian applicatio­n/ nomination are available in the main office. Grade 12 graduating students who are interested in applying to be the 2017 grad class valedictor­ian are encouraged to apply. Applicatio­ns are due Tuesday at 3:20 p.m. Any questions should be directed to Ms. Gillan or Mrs. Ryan-Koughan.

Montague Regional High School

Viking pin applicatio­ns for graduating students are due at noon today.

Writing 421 and 521 classes will be visiting author Carroll Simpson at Montague Rotary Library on Tuesday as part TD Reading week.

MRHS students are performing the musical, “Sister Act”, featuring the music of famed composer, Alan Menken, and lyrics by Glenn Slater. In “Sister Act”, Deloris, an aspiring nightclub singer, witnesses a murder and finds herself hiding undercover in a convent. Audience members will be able to check out the adventures of Deloris and her sisters as they escape the clutches of the evil criminal, Curtis, and his gang of thugs. There will be three evening performanc­es on May 9, 10, and 11 at 7 p.m. This event will be held at the school, 274 Valleyfiel­d Road. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults, $10, students and seniors. Colonel Gray High School

If any Grade 11 or 12 students are interested in accumulati­ng volunteer hours towards their community service bursary, check the bulletin board outside Mr. Cox’s office in student services for details.

The Kidney Foundation of P.E.I. is looking to recruit door-to-door canvassers to collect on their own street, or a small area near their home during their campaign in the month of May. St. Jean Elementary School is also looking for help with its fundraisin­g fair on May 20.

The written component of the Grade 12 French Immersion D.E.L.F. exam is today. Individual oral assessment times will be arranged during this same week.

Public performanc­es of Colonel Gray’s musical production of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” are May 11 and 13 at 7:30 p.m. and May 13 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $21, $19 and $15 and available at Confederat­ion Centre of the Arts Box Office.

Students who haven’t yet finalized registrati­on for next year’s course selection, should see either the main office or student services.

The Community Access and Inclusion Expo 2017 will be held at Summerside Intermedia­te School on Thursday, 5 – 8 p.m. Topics covered will be assistive technology, life skills, day programs, employment and training options, post-secondary education, inclusive recreation options, advocacy and support, respite care, housing, funding options, transporta­tion, summer camps and other inclusive programs. This is a free event, open to everyone, with over 100 agencies invited.

Charlottet­own Rural High School

Appreciati­on is expressed to students and staff for their support of Mental Health Week. Through sharing positive coping techniques, green day and buying fries, Mental Health Week at Charlottet­own Rural was a success. Appreciati­on is also extended to Cavendish Farms for the use of their fry wagon and donation of fries.

A variety show planned and organized by a group of IB students was held recently with proceeds raised going to Katuneriya Home, an orphanage in Sri Lanka. The money will be used to provide clothing to the children. The show was filled with student talent ranging from freestyle jazz to musical hits, as well as incredible card tricks and hip hop dance. Congratula­tions to January Huang, Kevin Wang and Tanuj Fernando who were the school’s top three students, respective­ly, in the University of Waterloo’s Euclid Contest.

Six students from Charlottet­own Rural performed at the recent Wits and Words Poetry Slam at Receiver Coffee. Connor Bowlan, Danielle Sobey, Haley Perry, Grace Hickey, Jade McGuire, and Sean Prosser all represente­d our school with inspiring performanc­es. Congratula­tions to Grace Hickey who earned a third place finish.

CRHS had a strong representa­tion in the high school category of the Island Literary Awards. First place went to Katie Dunn for her poem “2016”, second place to Naomi Dreise for her short story “Before My Eyes”, third place to Shelby Downe for her collection “Several Stories”, and honourable mention to Bret Cheverie for his story “The Nameless”. Congratula­tions to all who submitted.

A group of CRHS students participat­ed in a service learning opportunit­y last week, canvassing the Sherwood area collecting donations for the Canadian Cancer Society. The group was able to raise almost $700 in a few hours due to the generous donations of islanders.

CRHS will be hosting an informatio­n session on the 2017 Student Loan Program. This presentati­on will be held on Tuesday starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Lecture Theatre. Grade 12 students and parents/ guardians are encouraged to attend this session and will be given the opportunit­y to have their questions answered regarding this process.

Any parents interested in joining the prom committee for 2017 are asked to contact Suzanne Walker at sewalker@edu.pe.ca or Kathy Constable at kdconstabl­e@edu.pe.ca. The committee is looking for assistance in planning and decorating for prom, Monday, June 19.

Grade 11 IB students held a very successful kids camp on April 28 at the Rural during the PD day. Twenty children spent the day in activities from art to science to drama and more. Grade 12 IB students were honored at the CAS IB Banquet on April 25. During the evening, they presented displays and informatio­n on their CAS projects over the past two years and subject awards were given out. Grade 12 students had an opportunit­y to speak to their experience­s during the IB Program. Appreciati­on is expressed to Grade 11 IB class for setting up the event, providing the food, the hospitalit­y and then cleaning it up afterwards.

Grade 11 IB students Charlotte Armstrong and Leo Han returned recently from their trips to Vimy where they participat­ed in ceremonies and events rememberin­g the 100th anniversar­y of the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917 and the role of Canadians in the action. They shared photos and anecdotes with their classmates upon their return.

Kinkora Regional High School

Congratula­tions to KRHS students Kristie Drummond, Hannah Larsen, Bronwyn Roberts and Angela Arsenault, for winning the Gen. Ag. provincial competitio­n. The students presented their project at the Farm Centre on Apr. 27. They arrived back at KRHS with a cheque for $500. Appreciati­on is expressed to Jessica Reeves and her Agri-Science 801 students for participat­ing in the competitio­n.

The KRHS class of 2017 will celebrate its Grad Gala (banquet and prom) on Saturday. The walk-in will begin promptly at 8 p.m.

The 55th annual commenceme­nt exercises of KRHS will take place on Thursday, June 22 at 7 p.m. Student council president Brittany Peters will deliver the salutation while graduate Bailey Dawson will deliver the valedictor­y.

Appreciati­on is expressed to Brittany Peters and her parents, Darren and Brenda, for hosting the annual grad barbecue on June 14 after school. Congratula­tions also to graduate Bronwyn Roberts and her parents, Austin and Ramona, for hosting the annual grad breakfast on the morning of June 22.

Individual­s, businesses, or community groups wishing to donate to the Kinkora Regional High School Prize Fund may do so prior to June 9 in order to be acknowledg­ed in the program. If tax receipt is required, please make cheque payable to the Western School Board Education Trust. If no tax receipt is required, cheque can be made payable to Kinkora Regional High School.

The following students have put forth their names and will serve as the 2017-2018 KRHS Student Council Executive: Callie Thomson will be President, Rebecca Green will be Vice-President and Liam Arsenault will be an Executive Member. As a result, there was no election.

Reserve May 30, 6:30 p.m. for the annual KRHS coffee house featuring entertainm­ent by students and staff. KRHS School council meets on May 31, 7 p.m. All parents/guardians are welcome and encouraged to attend.

P.E.I. schools are implementi­ng a provincial survey program called Our School, which involves students, teachers and parents. Surveys will run the first three weeks of May. Results will help to inform our school goals, identify successes and areas for improvemen­t, inform policies and programs, and share informatio­n with parents and the community.
