- Ellen MacPhail

This month, P.E.I. Women’s Institute completes preparations for the annual roadside cleanup and WI provincial convention and reminds everyone about scholarship deadlines as well as upcoming branch events.

Saturday marks the 44th WI roadside cleanup and cash contest. All Islanders are asked to participate in keeping P.E.I. litter free. As a special thank you, PEIWI and partners encourages participation with a contest for the opportunity to win three cash prizes of $100 in each category. Categories include schools, family/individual, organizations or businesses. Entrants are asked to fill out a pledge sheet and follow up by sending a photo of their team in action. Pledge sheets can be filled in online by visiting www. iwmc.pe.ca or by downloading from www.peiwi.ca. Deadline for entries is May 29.

Free cleanup bags — to be used for the roadside cleanup only — are available from all IWMC Facilities across Prince Edward Island. Bag pick-up locations have been reduced this year as a pilot project to enhance monitoring of misused bags; however clear plastic bags from home can also be used. The Department of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy will pick up waste bags along Island roads during the week of May 15.

The upcoming month also sees other numerous branch events. Hampshire WI will be holding its annual Prize and Cash Bingo on May 11 at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) at the APM Centre in Cornwall. Admission is $10. Tickets are available at Clows Red and White, from branch members or by calling Karen at 902-626-8843.

Malpeque WI will be hosting a free CPR learning session on June 5 at the Malpeque Community Centre. It will be presented by the P.E.I. Heart and Stroke Foundation and Island First Aid. Call 902-439-3396 to register.

Brackley Beach WI invites everyone to its pancake breakfast and bake sale on May 27, 7:30-9:30 a.m. Tickets are $7 adults and $4 children and are available at 3330 Brackley Point Road. Proceeds are going to the upkeep of the Brackley Beach Community Centre. Call Ellen at 902-218-6984 for further information.

The Greater Charlottetown WI will be hosting a yard sale on June 10, 8 a.m. to noon at 64 Oak Dr. in Charlottetown, rain or shine. Proceeds of the sale will go the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation.

In scholarship news, PEIWI wishes to bring notice to several upcoming scholarship deadlines. For a complete scholarship list and more information please check the WI website at www.peiwi.ca or WI office at 902-368-4860.

In other provincial news, PEIWI board member Carol Connick, along with her committee has organized this year’s provincial convention at Credit Union Place in Summerside on June 3.

Registration deadline reminder for members is May 13. One of the highlights will be a panel on mental health with Joanne Crampton, commanding officer, RCMP; Verna Ryan, director of Mental Health and Addictions, Health P.E.I.; Alice Taylor, Handle with Care; and Jackie Doran-MacLeod, adult protection consultant, Health P.E.I. In the afternoon, Chris Ortenburger, committee member, will lead a discussion called “Daytrips and Staycations: Sharing Your Island ‘Gem Collection’” where members will reveal their favourite locations on Prince Edward Island.

The “Spring Is in the Air Gala Dinner” held in April was a great success with proceeds going to the O’Leary Community Hospital and Western Hospital in Alberton.

9Thank you to all attendees, those who donated, and to volunteers. The total raised will be announced and presented during the PEIWI Convention on June 3. This article is prepared by Ellen MacPhail, executive director for the PEIWI, and appears in The Guardian on the second Thursday of the month. For more information on the P.E.I.
