Ian Kenneth MacLean sentenced to total of 135 days in jail

A man who was banned from driving when he hit a truck in a bar’s parking lot and then left the scene was sentenced recently to 135 days in jail on four charges.

Ian Kenneth MacLean appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Georgetown where he pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident, breaching an undertaking and two counts of driving while disqualified.

The court heard MacLean was at a Montague bar on Dec. 31, 2016, when a woman he knew saw him and offered to drive him home because she thought he was going to drive while intoxicated.

She followed MacLean to the parking lot and told police she watched him pull out, hit her husband’s truck and drive away.

The RCMP arrested him several days later after patrols couldn’t locate him that night.

MacLean was under a driving prohibition at the time from a prior conviction for refusing the breathalyzer.

In April, the same officer who arrested MacLean after the accident saw him walking through the Sobeys parking lot in Montague carrying groceries to a vehicle. MacLean got into the vehicle and drove away, despite still being under a driving prohibition.

Before hearing his sentence, MacLean addressed the court to say he stopped drinking and had talked to his parole officer about a plan for after his release so he could stay sober.

MacLean also said he wanted to deal with the matters.

“It’s a chapter of my life I’d like to close,” he said.

Along with the jail time, MacLean will be on probation for two years and is banned from driving for three years.
