Islanders and visitors will soon be able to spend time with Canadian icons like Terry Fox, Maurice “Rocket” Richard and Lucy Maud Montgomery in Cavendish this year.

The three iconic Canadians, as well as several other national figures, are part of a Canada 150 room that’s been installed at the Wax World of the Stars on Mariner’s Cove Boardwalk in celebration of the country’s anniversary.

Although summer is still about a month away, the boardwalk will open for weekends starting this Saturday after a winter and spring of renovations to the site and additions of new vendors.

Mariner’s Cove operator Matthew Jelley, who is also president of the Maritime Fun Group, said the property’s opening is always a sure sign summer is on its way.

“But we are especially excited this year with all the changes and new attractions at the site,” said Jelley.

“All signs point to 2017 being our best season yet.”

Although the boardwalk will only be open for weekends in May, it will stay open daily from June 3 to Sept. 24.

The site will have more to offer this year, with new vendors, including Island’s Frozen Yogurt self-serve bar and Island Waffles, a new P.E.I. vendor that will serve fresh cooked waffles any time of day, including a “P.E.I. potato waffle”.

The Canada 150 room will also see figures of Louis Riel, Anne Shirley and others.

The wax world also features a new lobby, which includes an awards night scene complete with red carpet and 10 new wax figures from Hollywood.

The site will also see several new interactive exhibits at Ripley’s Believe it or Not! Odditorium, including a Color Brite wall and an interactive spin browser, which allows the user to control the speed of a video being played.

Mariner’s Cove Boardwalk is owned by Maritime Fun Group and was rebranded in 2016 from Cavendish Entertainment Plaza.

The company is also completing work on the new Cavendish Beach Adventure Zone just down the road at the former King Tut’s Tomb property.

That site, which will include a haunted house attraction, laser tag and mini golf, will open in mid-June.

“Our team has been working very hard throughout the winter to bring these three new attractions to Cavendish. It will further cement Cavendish’s reputation as Atlantic Canada’s family destination,” said Jelley.
