“It probably feels a lot warmer because of the humidex. Most people are going to think it’s really hot out (Thursday). It certainly is, but it feels a lot hotter than it is.” Ian Hubbard

Although records won’t have become official until 3 a.m. today, it looks like two temperature records were broken in P.E.I. yesterday.

In Summerside as of 4 p.m., it was 24.9 degrees, breaking the previous record of 23.9 degrees.

Also as of 4 p.m. in Maple Plains, it was 25.1 degrees with the previous record being 23.0 degrees.

Ian Hubbard, meteorologist with Environment Canada, said these are new records, but that the “record setting final temperature” for the day could change and won’t be official until early this morning.

The current record for May 18 in Charlottetown is 28.9 degrees and as of 4 p.m. it was only at 24 degrees, the warmest it had been all day.

“It probably feels a lot warmer because of the humidex,” explained Hubbard, who said the humidex was 27.9 degrees. “Most people are going to think it’s really hot out (Thursday). It certainly is, but it feels a lot hotter than it is.”

The weather forecast for today is mostly cloudy with some sunny breaks with temperatures around 23 degrees.

Hubbard said they are expecting some showers to push through in the afternoon with a slight risk of a thundershower.

Hubbard said the weekend won’t be as warm as Thursday and Friday.

There will be a cold front overnight Friday, and that is going to bring in some drier and cooler air.

However, Hubbard said it will still be a nice day on Saturday but only with a high of 12 degrees.

“It’s probably going to be fairly breezy as well with winds out of the northwest behind this cold front to start the weekend.”

On Sunday, it will be another sunny day with a high of 12 degrees.

Roseanne Gauthier, a youth services librarian in Charlottetown, has won the Reading Town P.E.I. Champion of Reading award.

The award recognizes a person in the community who champions reading as being essential to the quality of people’s lives and to their ability to take their place on the world stage.

Gauthier is dedicated to sharing literacy with children and teens across the Island and makes a kindred spirit in everyone she meets at the Confederation Centre Public Library.

She also played a critical role in expanding the diversity of the library’s collection and was also a leader in the PAWS to Read program, which matches children with therapy dogs.
