P.E.I. seniors organizations receive nearly $100K in federal funding

-

Prince Edward Island seniors can now volunteer to help reduce social isolation for their peers through federal funding.

The New Horizons for Seniors Program recently gave a total of $98,490 to several projects in P.E.I.

“Having a hearing disability is a key reason why people, many of whom are seniors, withdraw from social activities in the community and become isolated,” said Brenda Porter of the P.E.I. chapter of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association, which received $12,115 in funding Friday for its program “Pardon Me, What Did You Say?”

The money will allow seniors involved with the organization to develop a booklet and seminars to foster more effective communication skills between people with hearing impairments and the community.

“This Islandwide project is designed to give them, and those with whom they interact, simple strategies for talking with others — both in their homes and in their communities,” said Porter.
