Duke MacIssac former East Coast Pro Wrestling (ECPW) heavyweight champion

Local wrestler Gary Jessome is hoping for a packed arena when he returns to the squared circle after a decade.

Known to his wrestling fans as Duke MacIssac, he’s a former East Coast Pro Wrestling (ECPW) heavyweight champion.

Jessome is making his return to the canvass Sunday, May 28, as part of Island Invasion 2017 at the Sydney Mines and District Community Centre.

Island Invasion will also feature Maritime legend Brody Steele, Riddick Stone, The Answer, second generation star Zack Doyle and some surprises as well.

“Sports entertainment is something people can go watch together as a family, kids love it,” said Jessome, with a broad smile. “Entertainment wrestling is on the rise, all over the Maritimes they are selling out. Folks can come and cheer on the heroes, and boo the bad guys, it’s great fun and I love it. It’s never left me; it’s my passion. It’s opened up the world to me, but I’m always drawn back to my Cape Breton values.”

Jessome, who trains five to six days a week, is expecting a huge turnout on May 28.

“The local talent now is on an international level. Wrestlers who work in India, South Africa, Europe and across Canada and the U.S.,” said Jessome, who fishes lobster when he isn’t training. “Life put me on a different path. It’s

been 10 years and since I returned home a few years ago there doesn’t seen to be a day when someone doesn’t ask about wrestling,” he said.

“ECPW is the only promotion in Nova Scotia where you can see every major name in Maritime Wrestling. No other promotion has this caliber of talent combined from every wrestler on this show,” said ECPW owner Sheldon MacLean.

MacLean said the first show back has stars from the Maritimes, some of which have competed all over the world from England to Puerto Rico and all over Canada and the U.S.
