Charlottetown native, Hulio Rethy, has secured an endorsement of Philadelphia Flyers star defenceman Brayden Schenn, for the marine phytoplankton products he sells.
Rethy now lives in Sackville, N.B., working for Karen Marine Phytoplankton, which produces and sells the product in the form of powders, tablets and skin lotions.
The company says phytoplankton has been shown anecdotally to reduce inflammation issues in the body, while the skin lotion has been effective at treating psoriasis, eczema and rosacea.
Rethy was a softball pitcher in the early 1980s and 90s and travelled extensively throughout North America developing many sport relationships along the way.
None, however, was bigger than what happened last earlier this year for Karen Phytoplankton.
“We were looking through our daily sales reports a few months ago when I noticed an order that was put through under the name Brayden Schenn,” said Rethy. “Being a hockey fanatic, I immediately recognized the name and knew it was Brayden Schenn of the NHL Philadelphia Flyers hockey team so I decided to reach out to him.”
After a few months of exchanging emails, Schenn invited Rethy and other company representatives to Philadelphia to meet with him because he was interested in possibly being the company spokesperson.
Schenn told the company that he watched his Flyers teammate, Andrew MacDonald, taking the powder in his drink every morning before they hit the ice, so Schenn decided to try it as well.
Schenn said he has seen results with his recovery from soreness in his hips and knees.
In early April, Karen Phytoplankton made its second trip to Philadelphia to shoot a commercial with Schenn that will soon be released.
Rethy is responsible for looking after sales of Karen Phytoplankton in stores across P.E.I., where Murphy’s Pharmacy carries the product.
