Wide variety of things to do on Victoria Day
Depending on where you are and what you do for a living, there are plenty of options for Victoria Day 2017.
It’s a day off from work for some people as all civil service offices and Island schools will be closed for the day.
For these folks, that could mean more time for shopping as a number of employers in the Charlottetown area have decided to keep their doors open on May 22, while some businesses have decided to close or adjust their hours during this holiday Monday.
The Island’s two major grocery chains, Sobeys and Atlantic Superstore, are open during regular shopping hours.
P.E.I. Liquor Control Commission stores are also open.
Stores at the Charlottetown Mall are open, however stores at the Confederation Court Mall will remain closed for the day.
If you are looking for hardware, hours of operation vary.
Canadian Tire, Kent Building Supplies and Home Depot are open during regular business hours, but Home Hardware is only open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Princess Auto is only open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The city’s biggest department stores, Walmart and Sears, are open. Walmart is operating during regular business hours while Sears is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
To get a start on gardening, Jewell’s Country Market and Vankampen’s Greenhouses are both open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Calls to Shoppers Drug Mart, Lawtons Drugs and Murphy’s Pharmacies confirmed all three will be open but with varying hours.
Shoppers Drug Mart: 403 University Ave. - regular hours; 172 Queen St. - 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; 675 University Ave. - regular hours. Lawtons Drugs on Grafton Street is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; 220 Water St. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; St. Peters Road 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Murphy’s Pharmacies: Parkdale Pharmacy - 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Cornwall Pharmacy - 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; East Royalty Pharmacy – 1-5 p.m.; Queen Street Pharmacy - 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Stratford Pharmacy - 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; West Royalty Pharmacy - noon to 5 p.m.
Before going to any other pharmacy people should call ahead.
The Confederation Centre Public Library is closed, but anyone looking to catch a movie is in luck. The Cineplex has several show times throughout the day. City Cinema is also open showing “Tommy’s Honour” at 7 p.m.
Looking for some festival fun? The P.E.I. Environmental Health Co-op is hosting its 11th Dandelion Festival at Stratford Town Hall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free for this familyfriendly event.
Top off the holiday Monday with some evening events. There’s an art party hosted by East Coast Art Party P.E.I. at the Factory Cookhouse and Dancehall in Charlottetown beginning at 6:30 p.m., a Folk N Roll at Baba’s Lounge beginning at 7 p.m. featuring Jordan Hallin, Mitch Schurman and Shane High, a fundraising ceilidh at Winsloe United Church at 7:30 p.m. and an open mic with Morgan Hill at Hunter’s Ale House at 10 p.m.
