Hundreds of Islanders take part in March for Life

Although abortions are now provided in P.E.I., the fight against them has just begun for some Islanders.

The P.E.I. Right to Life Association said about 300 took part in Sunday’s March for Life, which began at St. Pius X and ended with a rally in front of the Coles Building.

Abortion services have been offered in P.E.I. since this past January.

Nicole Dupuis, executive director of the association said, “there has never been a more important time to show public support and respect for life at all stages.”

She said those involved in the march shared the message of “love them both.”

“What we really mean by that is love everybody and that’s what pro-life is. It’s not just about abortion, it’s not just about euthanasia, it’s really about spreading that message of love to all human beings regardless of age, or size or level of development or environment,” said Dupuis.

“We’re very happy to bring such a positive message to the Island today.”

Many at the rally held signs reading “Stand on Guard for Life” while others simply read “Pro-Life.”

Patricia Wiedemer was one speaker who shared her convictions with the crowd and encouraged them to spread the message.

“Our understanding of right to life is based on a truth that existed long before any kind of government, any kind of state, any kind of political association,” said Wiedemer. “We have to live as if we truly believe this is a gift of life, that this life is worth living.”

There was also a group of about half a dozen protesters chanting along the outside perimeter of the rally.

While the protestors would not provide their names, half were wearing masks, one member said they went to the rally to show solidarity with the activists who campaigned for abortion access on P.E.I.

Steven Chandler said he was at the rally to bring awareness to local politicians while also defending the rights of “the preborn from fertilization to natural death.”

“Every human has the right to life,” said Chandler, who also spoke on the group protesting the rally. “That’s their right. I’m not here to condemn them. It’s their right so we let them be and try not to be bothered by the noise.”

Dupuis said pro-life Islanders will continue to rally and currently hold monthly events in Summerside.

“We’re going to be continuing with other initiatives throughout the year as well. We do ongoing educational events and presentations and we’re hoping to do a lot more this year.”
