A P.E.I. man who was driving around 160 km/h when his truck hit another vehicle and killed a woman was sentenced Friday to two years less a day in jail.

Gregory William Lunn appeared before Justice Ben Taylor in P.E.I. Supreme Court in Charlottetown for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to dangerous driving causing death.

Taylor said the victim’s death was the result of Lunn deliberately driving double the speed limit on a country road.

Phyllis Hamill died on Oct. 8, 2015, when Lunn hit the back of her Honda Civic with his truck after she pulled out onto Covehead Road.

The court previously heard Lunn’s truck was travelling around 160 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

Data from Hamill’s car showed she was travelling no more than 25 km/h.

She died at the scene. Crown attorney Valerie Moore was seeking a sentence in the range of two years in custody along with a three-year driving ban.

Defence lawyer Brendan Hubley recommended a sentence in the one-year range.

During a previous court appearance, Hamill’s daughter Allyson McCarron read a victim impact statement and said her mother was a key part of her life.

“This crime has changed me forever,” McCarron said.

In giving his decision for the sentence, Taylor said the numbers and rate of deceleration were not key to the case.

Along with the jail time, Lunn will be on probation for two years after his release from jail.

After his release, Lunn will also be prohibited from driving for three years. Lunn must provide a DNA sample for the national databank and must pay a $200 victim surcharge.
