Murphy wins second PEISAA championship in two days
Don’t accuse Sarah Murphy of double-dipping after she won the senior women’s javelin title at the Prince Edward Island School Athletic Association (PEISAA) track and field championships Friday in Charlottetown.
It’s not her fault she was part of the Colonel Gray Colonels championship senior women’s softball team, which earned its third straight PEISAA title courtesy of an 8-0 win over the Westisle Wolverines on Thursday in Kensington.
For Murphy, it’s simply being in the right place at the right time with the right people.
“It’s really pretty amazing to have the chance to do these activities,” said the Grade 12 student from Charlottetown. “We have a great coach in Mike Peterson and (a great athletic director in) Laura Lindsay.”
Murphy had solid throws in the javelin finals, including a 27.31-metre toss to take the title, her third javelin gold in four years.
Last year, she finished second.
A lot of her throwing success she attributes to softball. By the way, her Colonels haven’t lost a PEISAA game in more than two years.
“I grew up playing on the ball field. My gym teacher at Queen Charlotte wanted me to tryout shot put and javelin. As soon as I tried javelin, I fell in love with it. I was amazed how far this little stick could go,” said Murphy, who also finished second in senior women’s shot put (8.71 metres) on Friday.
Along with the track and field and softball titles, there’s also a recent PEISAA senior women’s volleyball crown to stuff into her ever-expanding trophy holder.
“I have a box at home, but I’ll have to build a bigger one,” she said.
