WI announces winners

Provincial and national awards were presented at the recent W.I. provincial convention at Credit Union Place in Summerside that attracted more than 180 delegates from the 75 branches across the Island.

Mary Robinson, Augustine Cove, received the W.I. Women in Agricultur­e Award. Robinson, along with family members, actively manages Eric C. Robinson Inc., and its subsidiari­es. The operation is a third generation family agri-business and was recognized in 2014 as one of Prince Edward Island’s heritage farms.

Robinson has served the Federation of Agricultur­e for the past eight years and remains on the board as past president. She also sits on numerous other national committees, councils and boards within the agricultur­al industry.

This recognitio­n is for an Island woman making a major contributi­on to the P.E.I. agricultur­e sector and is presented bi-annually by the P.E.I. Women’s Institute.

Linda Hoy, national president, was in Summerside to present Marie Kenny with the national Adelaide Hunter Hoodless 2017 Canadian Woman of the Year Award. Orell Smallman is this year’s recipient of the provincial Adelaide Hoodless Award for her tireless commitment to Women’s Institute.

Also during the convention, a cheque each for $8,310 was presented to Eva Rogerson, of the O’Leary (Hospital) Community Health Foundation and to Dave McKenna, chairman of Western Hospital Foundation. The committee, led by Helen Dawson and Donna Butler, the numerous donations, as well as efforts of ticket purchasers and volunteers.

Winners from the Cleanup and Win contest held as part of the 44th W.I. Roadside Cleanup on May 13 were recently drawn.

A record number of cleanup teams across P.E.I. vied for the opportunit­y to win several cash prizes of $100. Each team pledged their participat­ion and included a picture of their team in action to complete their entry. Each winner receives $100.

Families and Individual­s: Hartford’s Cleaners, Team Pick Me Up and Christina Painter;

Organizati­ons: Cornwall Girl Guides (Sparks, Brownies and Guides), 327 Southern Kings Air Cadets and Spring Brook Pickers.

Schools: Vernon River Consolidat­ed School, Englewood Grade 8 Class, Grade 1 Tignish Elementary School.

Business: Invesco Go Green, and The Hughes Jones Centre.

The P.E.I. W.I. board of directors appreciate­s the efforts of everyone and looks forward to a commemorat­ive 45th year in 2018.

The P.E.I. Women’s Institute Exhibition Committee is accepting applicatio­ns for the annual Premier’s Craft Education Award for exhibitors from across P.E.I. for Old Home Week’s Handcrafts, Horticultu­re and Arts Competitio­n. This award, presented annually since 2006, is used to enhance skill and proficienc­y in a chosen craft and to share experience with others.

Three bursaries of $1,000 will assist in funding recipients to attend training within two years of presentati­on. For further informatio­n, contact the provincial office, 902-368-4860. The deadline for applicatio­ns is June 29.

In branch news, the Argyle Shore W.I. has three events in June and July. A Festival of Small Halls” event is June 14 – Songs and Stories with Dutch Thompson, Donna Morrissey, and musical guest William Prince. Doors open at 7 p.m.
