Morell needs new recreational facility

If money raised not spent on new arena, it would be major opportunity missed for years to come

My understanding is that almost $1 million has been raised through many fund raising events to be used towards the future of a recreational facility in the Morell area.

The almost 60-year-old Morell Community Rink has more problems than this money can solve. ]

To me, spending this money in this way doesn’t make sense.

This money could be better spent towards a new facility. The federal government has been recently saying there are billions of dollars of infrastructure money available.

Usually the provincial government will match this money. A new facility would have reduced operating costs through new efficiencies as compared to the costs of operating the old facility.

A new facility could have floor space rental income if space was made for businesses to set up shop. With the addition of a walking track and a hall with a kitchen available for rent for various functions this has the potential for more rental income. Of course there is also the ice rental income.

A spinoff of a new facility would be the work created from the new construction. A new facility would encourage exercise and fitness for everybody’s benefit.

Considering this would be the only major facility of this type along the north shore from Charlottetown to Souris gives it the potential of good usage.

I believe in the old Roman adage: build it and they will come. I also believe if the money that has been raised is not spent on a new facility then it would be a major opportunity missed for many years to come.

Therefore I respectfully ask, given these good reasons, why a new recreational facility/ wellness centre would not be viable for this large area?
