Students win contest

Winners in the My Community, My Canada

-

Students from Southern Kings Consolidated and Stonepark Intermediate were recently named provincial winners in the My Community, My Canada contest.

Participants in the Parks Canada and Confederation Centre of the Arts contest were asked to choose an important person in their community and create a project to capture their contributions to the makeup and vision of Canada.

The winner of the Group Prize was Mrs. Matheson’s Grade 6 class from Southern Kings Consolidated for their project depicting their hard-working community and how a well-connected community makes the world go around.

Skye MacNeill, a Grade 6 student also from Southern Kings Consolidated, took home first place for her project about her community’s loving and caring attitudes towards one another and how this affects her.

In second place was Grace Yeo, a Grade 8 student from Stonepark Intermediate School, who created a hand-sketched drawing of Canadian sports.

Ellie Conohan, also a Grade 8 student from Stonepark, took third place with a layered collage about the “true north strong and free.”

The winning individual projects and group project were displayed at Confederation Centre earlier this month and are on the Province House National Historic Site website. The winning class received a special drawing class with Island artist Maurice Bernard and a trip to “the Story of Confederation” program at Confederation Centre for a tour with a Confederation Player.

Individual winners received prize packages from Parks Canada and the Confederation Centre.
