Islanders off to multisport world championships
Farrell, McCarthy, Landry will compete in August
Three Prince Edward Islanders will compete internationally later this summer.
Kevin Farrell, Dan McCarthy and Kim Landry are headed to the Penticton 2017 International Triathlon Union (ITU) multisport world championships in British Columbia from Aug. 18 to 27. This consists of numerous triathlon – swimming, biking and running – and duathlon – biking and running – events from the elite level to age-group categories.
“Well, it’s not often one gets the chance to compete at a world level, so why not take advantage of the opportunity,” commented McCarthy, who acknowledges the competition will be tough.
Farrell, McCarthy and Landry qualified at last year’s Tri-Lobster triathlon in Summerside. This year’s triathlon is set for July 15 and 16, and for more information visit tripei.com.
Farrell
The 72-year-old Farrell has been participating in running events throughout most of his life.
In May 2016, he wanted to try something new, and decided to do his first duathlon race at China Point. He enjoyed the sport, and was immediately hooked on it.
Farrell will be competing in the age group world championships for the super spring duathlon. He has prepared all year, training six days a week by biking and running, as well as incorporating weight training and swimming.
McCarthy
McCarthy will be participating in the 65 to 69 age division of the sprint duathlon world championships.
McCarthy, who competes regularly in duathlons and road races across the Island, began training — running and cycling — in March.
He was hampered by a knee injury in April, but seems to have resolved this issue.
Landry
Landry will be participating in the 35 to 39 age division of the sprint duathlon. She regularly attends all of the duathlon events across Prince Edward Island, and is looking forward to the opportunity to attend the world championships and represent both her province and country.
