United teams win two divisions

Annual kickoff tournament held over weekend

It was a big weekend for the host Summerside United Soccer Club.

Summerside teams won two of the six divisions, and finished runners-up in two categories, as the United held its annual kickoff tournament at Eric Johnston Field and Three Oaks Senior High School.

United squads won the Under-13 Premier Girls Division and the Under-11 Girls Division while posting runner-up performanc­es in under-11 girls and the Second Division of under-13 girls.

Other gold-medal winners were the Sherwood-Parkdale Rangers in under-11 boys; West Prince Storm in under13 girls (First Division); Antigonish Celtics in under13 boys (First Division), and Central Queens in under-13 girls (Second Division).

Overall, 19 teams, including 17 from P.E.I., took part in the three-day event.

Following is a recap of each championsh­ip game, which were all played at Eric Johnston Field on Sunday:

Under-13 Girls Premier Division Summerside 2 Winsloe/ Charlottet­own Royals 0

Lindsay Stewart and Kristyn Taylor found the back of the net for the United while Lauren Clark recorded the clean sheet in goal.

Summerside led 1-0 at halftime.

First Division West Prince 2 Eliot River Ramblers 0

Skyla Jeffery provided the Storm with shutout goaltendin­g, and Brooke Doucette scored both goals – one in each half.

Second Division Central Queens 2 Summerside Team One United 0

Ava Dykstra and Charleigh Corke took care of the offence for Central Queens.

Ellen MacPherson and Venna Gallant shared the shutout as Central Queens took a 1-0 advantage into the half.

Under-13 Boys First Division Antigonish 1 Eliot River 0

Kieran MacDonald scored in the game’s final minute to break a scoreless tie and lift Antigonish to victory. The Rangers scored twice in the final four minutes to pull out a 3-1 victory.

Casey Briggs and Parker Benoit teamed up to register the shutout.

Under-11 Girls Summerside Team One 2 Summerside Team Two 1 (OT)

Annie Morency scored both goals for Team One, including the game-winning tally early in the first half of overtime. Ava Pomeroy answered for Team Two.

The score was halftime. tied 1-1

Under-11 Boys Sherwood-Parkdale 3 Kensington 1

at

Chase Bell, Patrick McMonagle and Cohen Affleck scored for the Rangers, who scored twice in the final four minutes of regulation time to break open a 1-1 game.

Ethan Dickson countered for Kensington, and the teams were even 1-1 at the intermissi­on.
