P.E.I. under-15 boys to play for gold

The P.E.I. under-15 boys have secured a spot in the championsh­ip game of the Bell Aliant Atlantic soccer championsh­ips.

P.E.I. claimed a spot in the final with their second shutout victory over Nova Scotia – a 2-0 decision.

With Newfoundla­nd and Labrador also having a 2-0 (won-lost) record at the end of action on Day 2, the teams will play each other in the last game of the round robin on Monday, and again on Tuesday in the gold-medal match.

In Game 1 on Saturday, Jugraj Singh scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over New Brunswick, and Isaac Wolters registered the clean sheet.

Against Nova Scotia on Sunday, Andrew Stewart and Santiago Gomez scored for Team P.E.I., which received another shutout from Wolters.

Under-16 boys

The P.E.I. under-16 boys dropped a 3-1 decision to Nova Scotia on Sunday, with Gabe Inman picking up the goal.

A 2-1 victory over New Brunswick on Saturday, keyed by a two-goal performanc­e by Roan Saengmeng, means P.E.I. will battle Newfoundla­nd and Labrador on Monday for a berth in Tuesday’s final.

Girls

In girls’ action in Halifax, N.S., the under-15 and under-16 squads have 1-1 (won-lost) records following Sunday’s action.

The under-15 team posted a 5-1 victory over New Brunswick on Saturday, and suffered a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Newfoundla­nd and Labrador on Sunday.

Heidi Lauwerijss­en and Haillie Cormier recorded two goals each, and Renee Arsenault had the single marker in their victory on Saturday. Lauwerijss­en netted the lone goal against Newfoundla­nd and Labrador.

The under-16 squad lost on opening day 3-2 against New Brunswick. Emily Cormier scored both goals for the Island squad.

P.E.I. rebounded for a 3-1 victory over Newfoundla­nd and Labrador on Sunday. Caitlyn McCloskey (2) and Phoebe Mitchell provided P.E.I’s goals.

Both Island teams will battle Nova Scotia on Monday to see if they can get into the gold-medal matches on Tuesday.
