Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is kicking off his Canada 150 celebrations in the place where it all began.

The prime minister will visit Prince Edward Island today as part of a mini-tour of two of the Maritime provinces.

Prince Edward Island hosted the original meetings of the Fathers of Confederation in 1864 — meetings that eventually led to the formation of Canada.

Trudeau will begin his day in P.E.I. this morning in a private meeting with Premier Wade MacLauchlan.

He will then head to Montague, where he will join Cardigan MP Lawrence MacAulay for a meet-and-greet at the Montague Curling Club.

This event is open to the public and begins at 9 a.m.

Following this, Trudeau will return to Charlottetown, where he will tour the Canada C3 boat, which has been on a cross-Canada expedition with a diverse group of Canadians connecting with communities, conducting research, creating art and celebrating Canada.

Following his tour, Trudeau will hold a media availability in Charlottetown before leaving the province and heading to New Brunswick, where he will attend two events in and around Fredericton.

This will mark Trudeau’s second visit to P.E.I. since taking office in 2015. Last year, Trudeau came to the province during Old Home Week and was greeted by large crowds of supporters.

The Guardian will provide full coverage of his visit to the province today, with regular updates online today and full coverage and reaction in Friday’s print and e-editions.
