West switched to the eight of clubs for the jack, deuce and seven. A spade was taken by the king as West parted with a heart. East exited with the spade jack but South continued with the jack of diamonds. However, he called for dummy's king when West played a spot-card. The ace of clubs was followed by a club to the ten and the contract was just home, N-S +590.

South's resolve to overcall was an aggressive action with an emaciated suit and only 8 HCP.

He concluded that partner would not be inclined to balance if he passed because North was certain to hold heart length.

North was full value for the raise to the major suit game. He could be sure that there were no heart losers, he held the king of diamonds behind West, four-card spade support and the ace of clubs. In essence, he owned a virtual goldmine and could not envision that partner had overcalled with such skimpy values. The defense could not prevent South from scoring ten tricks on this layout but they could have made the task more difficult. West should not shift to a club but play a heart. Declarer must now guess both minors to be successful.
