Suspects arrested, charged, a year after deadly Winnipeg fire
WINNIPEG — Murder charges have been laid against two Winnipeg men after a rooming house fire in the city that killed two people. Brenda Campbell, who was 51, and a 61-year-old man, John McKinnon Bendon, died in the north-end home last July.
Five other people were in the rooming house at the time and investigators later said they believed the blaze was linked to the drug trade. Police say Jonathon Graham Barstad, who was already in custody on an unrelated matter, was arrested Thursday, while the second accused, Edward Wade Beardy, was arrested the same day in the city’s north end.
The men, both in their mid30s, are facing two counts each of second-degree murder and arson with disregard for life.
Police also say the pair were known to them. (The Canadian Press, CTV Winnipeg)
