For­mer chief faces charges

SYD­NEY, N.S. — Chief Mor­ley Goo­goo has been charged with as­sault af­ter an al­ter­ca­tion at a ho­tel in Syd­ney last month.

Goo­goo, who rep­re­sents Nova Sco­tia and New­found­land to the As­sem­bly of First Na­tions, was charged late Fri­day with as­sault and dis­turb­ing the peace at the Hamp­ton Inn in Syd­ney on June 17.

He was re­leased from po­lice cus­tody on a prom­ise to ap­pear in court July 31.

His re­lease con­di­tions in­clude ab­stain­ing from al­co­hol, stay­ing away from the ho­tel and the ad­join­ing Membertou Con­ven­tion Cen­tre, re­main­ing in Nova Sco­tia, and not con­tact­ing the in­di­vid­ual he is al­leged to have as­saulted.
