Lighthouse open house Saturday

The Point Prim Lighthouse Society is hosting an open house Saturday to celebrate its acquisitio­n of the lighthouse and to showcase recent improvemen­ts such as the reinforced seawall, the expanded parking lot and the newly constructe­d keeper’s cottage.

The new keeper’s cottage houses a gift shop, historical interpreta­tion centre, and accessible washrooms. It also features an attached band shell for hosting entertainm­ent and weddings.

Free tours of the lighthouse will be provided from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. A free barbecue runs from 1-3 p.m. Musicians Gordon Belsher and Richard Wood will perform at 1 p.m. Guest speakers at 2 p.m. include Lt.-Gov. Frank Lewis and Lawrence MacAulay, minister of Agricultur­e and Agri-food Canada. Free strawberri­es and ice cream will be served from 1-4 p.m.

The public is asked to bring lawn chairs.
