Mudmen tally perfect weekend

P.E.I. goes 2-0 in Nova Scotia senior rugby play over the weekend

-

The Hunter’s Ale House Mudmen rugby club teams were perfect in the Nova Scotia Senior Men’s Rugby League last weekend.

The Mudmen A squad downed the Saint John Trojans 41-26 in Elite Division action Saturday, and the Mudmen B team gained a forfeit win over the Halifax Tars on Sunday.

On Saturday in Saint John, N.B., Charlie Waddell led the Mudmen with three trys while Mike Deighan’s kicking was on point all day.

Phil Gallant, longtime Mudmen player and organizer, credited much of the victory to younger players filling in for banged-up veterans.

“A lot of great young players are stepping up in key roles while a lot of players are recovering,” said Gallant.

Adam Fitzpatrick’s stifling defence and strong running earned him the Mudmen manof-the-match award.

The Mudmen return to the pitch on Saturday, July 29, when the A Division team travels to Nova Scotia for a battle against Windsor (3 p.m.), and the B Division squad hosts Eastern Shore. Game time is 1 p.m. at Co-op Field in Charlottetown.

The Charlottetown Rugby Football Club also resumes its Nova Scotia Senior Women’s Rugby League season after three weeks off in a Tier A tussle versus the Valley Bulldogs.

Kickoff at Co-op is 3 p.m.
