Jones shuts down N.L. team

Pa­trick Young, Josh My­ers and Ben MacDougall each had two hits as P.E.I. de­feated New­found­land and Labrador 8-2 in men’s base­ball.

Lo­gan MacDougall and Dy­lan Noo­nan both added sin­gles.

P.E.I. scored deuces in the first, third, fourth and sixth in­nings while New­found­land coun­tered with sin­gle runs in the fourth and fifth in­nings.

Josh My­ers threw two in­nings of re­lief for the vic­tory.

He al­lowed two runs on three walks. Max Ben­ton started and lim­ited New­found­land to one hit in three in­nings while Nathan Jones struck out five in two in­nings to end the game.

P.E.I. (2-3) plays Nova Scotia on Thurs­day for sev­enth place.

Softball

P.E.I. dropped a pair of games Tues­day to fall to 3-5 at the Canada Games softball tour­na­ment.

New­found­land and Labrador de­feated P.E.I. 9-1 while Que­bec won 10-1.

Avery Arse­nault and Sam Walsh had the Is­land’s lone hits against New­found­land.

Lo­gan Gal­lant took the loss, giv­ing up eight runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 in­nings.

Walsh went 2-for-2 against Que­bec while Arse­nault and Matt Lange each added one.

Jonathan Arse­nault was tagged with the loss, al­low­ing nine runs on eight hits.

P.E.I. fin­ishes the round robin to­day with a game against Saskatchewan (8-0) at 1 p.m. At­lantic.

Women’s bas­ket­ball

New­found­land and Labrador went on a 14-0 run in the first five min­utes of the fourth quar­ter to de­feat P.E.I. 89-79 in a women’s bas­ket­ball plac­ing game.

Nikki Arse­nault led P.E.I. with 28 points, 11 re­bounds and seven steals while Lexi MacIn­nis added 21 points.

Devon Lawlor and Ash­ley Plaggen­ho­eff both con­trib­uted 10 points.

The Is­land squad led 23-11 after the first quar­ter, 43-26 at the half and 65-49 head­ing to the fourth.

P.E.I. plays Yukon Thurs­day at 12:30 p.m. At­lantic.
