Off into the sunset

Free, family-friendly series at Victoria Park begins Aug. 22 with music, movies and art

A new free, family-friendly event is being launched Aug. 22 at Victoria Park in Charlottet­own.

The Victoria Park Cultural Pavilion will be the focal point for the Victoria Park Sunset Series, featuring five nights of music, movies and art from Aug. 22 to 27.

The series will kick off on Tuesday, Aug. 22, at 6:30 p.m. with a special musical presentati­on by Locomotion at the pavilion. Locomotion is a musical production which features stories of days gone by when trains once travelled through the communitie­s, along the shorelines and steamed through the countrysid­e of P.E.I. The musical journey, with narration and vocals under the direction of Niall MacKay, also features Kendall Docherty on vocals and keyboard, Peter Burke on vocals, guitar and harmonica, Jimi Platts on vocals and lead guitar, Heartz Godkin on bass guitar, Brian Knox on vocals and drums and Brian Blacquire on banjo.

The musical entertainm­ent continues on Thursday, Aug. 24 with music by Island musicians Julia Dunn at 7:30 p.m. and The Beck Sisters at 8:30 p.m.

On Friday, Aug. 25, two feature films will be played on a large outdoor screen at the Victoria Park Cultural Pavilion. “Trolls” (2016) will play at 7 p.m. and the newly released Disney classic, “Beauty and The Beast” will play at 8:45 p.m. Both films are rated PG.

Art in the Open, a free annual open air gallery highlighti­ng Charlottet­own’s vibrant art scene, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 26, with focal points at Victoria Park, the Confederat­ion Centre of the Arts, Victoria Row, Rochford Square and Connaught Square. The Victoria Park Sunset Series will conclude on Sunday, Aug. 27 with a songwriter­s’ circle beginning at 7 p.m., featuring Mark Haines, Kinley, Dylan Menzie and host Tara MacLean.
