Island women’s volleyball, softball teams earn first victories on Tuesday

Prince Edward Island’s women’s volleyball team won its first match at the Canada Games Tuesday in Winnipeg.

They defeated the Yukon 3-2 (21-25, 27-25, 25-17, 18-25, 154). It included scoring seven straight points for the victory in the deciding set.

Nova Scotia defeated P.E.I. 3-0 (25-15, 25-10, 25-15) in an afternoon contest.

P.E.I. (1-2) plays Manitoba today at 3 p.m. and Saskatchew­an at 10 p.m. to complete group play. All times are Atlantic.

Men’s volleyball

Nova Scotia defeated P.E.I. 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-12) in men’s volleyball action and was playing Saskatchew­an in a night match.

P.E.I. (0-2) plays British Columbia today at 6 p.m.

Golf

Jason Poley and Tyler Hashmi are six and seven strokes off the lead, respective­ly, after Round 1 at the golf competitio­n at the Southwood Golf and Country Club.

Poley, a Stratford native, shot a 1-over 73 while Hashmi, of Charlottet­own, recorded a 74.

Quebec’s Christophe­r Charles Vandette leads the field after firing a 5-under 67.

Nine Mile Creek’s Alex Taylor shot a 78.

The men’s team is tied for sixth.

Summerside native Mya Chisholm was the top Island female after shooting 97, followed by Summerside’s Reese MacDonald (104) and Kensington’s Lexi Murphy (112). They are in 10th place in the team event.

Quebec’s Sarah-Éve Florence Monique Rheaume leads the field at 4-under 68.

Participan­ts play all four rounds with medals handed out in both individual and team divisions.

Softball

P.E.I. earned its first win on the softball diamond in Headingley, Man., Tuesday night,

defeating Newfoundla­nd and Labrador 10-3 in five innings.

Emily Cairns, Katie Rayner, Clara Wood and Brianna Arsenault each had two hits while Jada Yeo, Vanessa Rennie, Kaelyn White and Eryn Hustler all added one.

P.E.I. had a five-run second inning to take a 7-2 lead into the third and never looked back.

Sydney Halliwell allowed two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out three for the win.

Quebec built a 5-0 lead after 3 ½ innings and hung on for a 7-5 victory over Team P.E.I. in Tuesday’s early game.

Yeo was 2-for-4 with two singles and two runs scored for the Island squad. Sarah Woodside doubled while Cairns, Kailey Koughan, Madison Clarke, Wood and White each had a single.

Emily Brothers allowed four runs on five hits in taking the loss. Alyssa Fleming gave up three runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings of relief.

Quebec scored a run in the first and deuces in the third, fourth and sixth innings while P.E.I. replied with a deuce in the fourth and three more in the sixth.

They play Alberta and British Columbia at noon and 5 p.m.

Soccer

The Island’s men’s soccer team lost 1-0 to Alberta to fall to 0-2 in a tough pool that includes Ontario. Their schedule heading forward was not known at press time.

Tennis

Manitoba defeated P.E.I. 4-2 in team tennis action.

August McIntyre won 2-0 (6-3, 6-3) in singles action while Jack Digout and Enrique Riveroll Jr. won 2-0 (6-2, 6-3) in doubles play.

McIntyre also defeated a Nova Scotia player 2-0 (6-4, 6-2).
