In medal contention

Trio will be in medal match today at wrestling competitio­n

Three Island wrestlers are a win a way from earning a medal at the Canada Games in Winnipeg.

Summerside’s Ben Tanton, Charlottet­own’s Jesse Heartz and Stratford’s Christian MacDonald each finished in the top four. A win in today’s first match means they advance to the gold medal match while a loss gives them a shot at bronze.

The first match goes at noon Atlantic.

Golf

Stratford’s Jason Poley sits ninth in the men’s golf championsh­ip after firing a 1-under 71 during third-round play Thursday at the Southwood Golf and Country Club.

He enters today’s final round with a 4-over 220 score. Christophe­r Charles Vandette leads the pack at 210.

Charlottet­own’s Tyler Hashmi carded a 1-over 73 on Thursday and has a three-round score of 230. Nine Mile Creek’s Alex Taylor shot a 76 Thursday and is 235 after three days of play.

The Island squad is eighth in the men’s team event at 448 while Quebec leads at 421.

In women’s action, Kensington’s Lexi Murphy shot a 94 to lead the Island contingent. She has improved her score each of

the three rounds.

Summerside’s Mya Chisholm shot a 95 and is sitting at 295 heading to the final round while Summerside’s Reese MacDonald shot a 101 for 306 after three rounds.

Soccer

P.E.I. lost 3-1 to Saskatchew­an and will play the Northwest Territorie­s today at 3:30 p.m. in a placing game.

Donovan Wyand scored off a Jensen Gauthier corner kick in injury time against Saskatchew­an.

Volleyball

P.E.I. beat the Northwest Territorie­s 3-1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-18, 25-15) in men’s volleyball placing action on Thursday.

They play New Brunswick today at 10:30 a.m. Atlantic.

Softball

P.E.I. split a pair of games in the women’s softball competitio­n on Thursday, beating New Brunswick 8-1 and losing 5-0 to Ontario.

They are 2-6 heading to today’s games against Nova Scotia at noon.

Jada Yeo, Madison Clarke, Sarah Woodside and Clara Wood each had two hits against New Brunswick. Kailey Koughan had a triple while Emily Cairns and Vanessa Rennie each singled.

Alyssa Fleming allowed a run on five hits in 4 1/3 innings. She walked two and struck out two. Emily Brothers gave up four hits ands truck out two in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

P.E.I. led 2-0 through four innings before adding two in the fifth, one in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

Lauryn Debono struck out three in four innings for the win and combined with Taylor Robblee for a no-hitter. Sydney Halliwell took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in two innings.
