Rising stars at playhouse

The Victoria Playhouse welcomes rising stars Tim Moxam and Nick Doneff to the stage on Aug. 14.

Moxam’s friend and tourmate Australian Liz Stringer rounds out the bill.

Lauded for his charming stage presence and earthy vocals, Toronto-based Moxam has been compared to Cat Stevens, Neil Young and David Gray.

“Moxam makes crisp, clear acoustic songs straight out of the 1970’s singer-songwriter tradition, built up with pop melodies and a subtle amount of extra instruments and harmonies,” says music blogger Bob Mersereau.

“The effect is meditative, soothing and seductive, as Moxam has a fine voice and a great delivery.”

Born and raised in Southern Ontario, Doneff has become a well-known and popular face in Island music scene and his self-titled debut album has won acclaim in broader circles, including catching the attention of CBC Radio’s Q host Tom Power.

“Happened upon some beautiful music tonight from an Ontario/P.E.I. songwriter named Nick Doneff. Pretty, Prine-y songs,” tweeted Power.

Roots-pop-folk artist Stringer was a late, but welcome addition to the bill for this show. Based in Melbourne, Australia, Stringer toured the Maritimes last winter, when she played the Old Triangle and The Dunk with Tim Moxam.
