Wendell Francis McDonald, born on November 7th, 1938 in Kelly’s Cross, P.E.I., was called home by our Lord on August 19th 2017. Wendell was the son of Maurice and Rita McDonald, also of Kelly’s Cross. He had six siblings and was predeceased by Michael, Carl, Clifford (Kip), Fred, Burnell and is survived by his sister Mary, (Frank) Kelly. Early in the 1960s Wendell married an island girl, Thelma Gallant. They had three children, Glenn, Paul and Lisa after resettling in Salem, Mass. The family later relocated to Calgary, Alberta where Paul and Lisa now live. Glenn died tragically, before his time, in 1988. Wendell’s children, Paul McDonald and Lisa Smith are joined in mourning Wendell’s passing with Lisa’s husband Jeff and children Nick and Christopher. Wendell worked for many years in the oil patch in Alberta and Wyoming, finally returning home to Kelly’s Cross in 1999 and settling close to brothers Burnell, Kip and sister Mary. Wendell’s musical talent with the fiddle gained him acclaim far and wide after his return to Kelly’s Cross and he could often be found regaling relatives and friends. He also became a member of the Mixed Nuts who entertained “old folks” in the Charlottetown community. The annual tea party and Pig House Party at which Wendell always played became a local institution and was even the subject of a CBC documentary. Today and forevermore, Wendell will be found with Glenn, Michael, Carl, Clifford (Kip), Fred, Burnell and others at our Lord’s Ceilidh. Resting at the Dawson Funeral Home, Crapaud. Please join us for funeral mass in remembering Wendell at St. Joseph’s Church, Kelly’s Cross, on Thursday, August 24, at 10 a.m. It will be followed by coffee and sandwiches graciously provided by the CWL. In lieu of flowers donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated.
