“The trucking community loves getting together to show our support in our own way, and this is a great cause and a great way to show we care about our communities and the people in them.”

The World’s Largest Convoy event for Special Olympics P.E.I. is set for Aug. 27.

This unique one-day fundraiser is a celebration of the trucking industry and its support of Special Olympics.

The convoy will start at 10 a.m. on Aug. 27 from Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) at 165 John Yeo Dr., Charlottetown. The top fundraising truck will receive the honour of lead truck and will lead the convoy on a loop to South Rustico and back to DFO for a community celebration, which will include a barbecue lunch, awards and prize draws.

This year’s convoy will include local celebrity drivers, and P.E.I. Special Olympic athletes will be accompanying trucks as part of an athlete co-pilot program.

Thomas Annear of Morley Annear Trucking has helped coordinate the event for the past two years.

“The trucking community loves getting together to show our support in our own way, and this is a great cause and a great way to show we care about our communities and the people in them.”

Last year’s event drew a convoy of 27 trucks, including drivers from off-Island. Money raised supports the 350 athletes on P.E.I. who participate in Special Olympics programs across the Island.

The P.E.I. Law Enforcement Torch Run committee chairman, Roger Steadman, is happy to see support coming from various partners.

“The LETR committee is pleased to have such strong community support behind the truck convoy event this year and wants to thank the Island trucking sector as well as Cavendish Agri Services for their sponsorship. Their support means more P.E.I. Special Olympics participants can experience achievement, joy and unity through sport. And that is what this event is all about.”

“Cavendish Agri Services is proud to be the title sponsor of the 2017 Truck Convoy for Special Olympics in P.E.I.,” added David Muirhead, general manager.

“We encourage other transportation companies to join us for this special event as we raise awareness, and much needed funds, for the Special Olympics here in P.E.I.”
