Many chances to help others
Fundraisers, chances to donate around the South Shore
For reasons I can’t quite explain, I recently began to wonder about the premise of “pink for girls and blue for boys”.
I discovered that there are an endless number of books written on this and related subjects. Historians reveal that up until the 20th century both genders wore white dresses simply because of their practicality. A dress made nappy changes easier and white was easier to keep clean using bleach.
As is often the case, enter the marketing people and a new trend of gender differentiation by colour was born. However, it is interesting to note that in the early 1900’s pink was promoted for boys because it is a stronger, more vibrant colour, whereas the softer and more subtle blue was recommended for delicate little girls.
By the 1940’s the trend was reversed — promoting blue for boys and pink for girls — followed shortly by a trend toward unisex clothing. Amid all this fuss, fashion connoisseurs and marketers began to promote the idea that the colour of clothing should be decided based on eye, hair and skin tone – a trend that continues to this day. My curiosity is sated.
