When will the Liberals stop raising taxes?

Proposals to change way businesses are taxed; to end tax-planning strategies to avoid higher tax rates

- BY ROB MOORE Rob Moore is the Conservative Party’s critic for Atlantic Canada

Since taking office, Prime Minister Trudeau and his Liberal government haven’t met a tax hike that they don’t like. From higher small business tax rates and cancelled EI tax reductions, to increased payroll taxes and a new federal carbon tax, entrepreneurs are being forced to pay for the government’s out-of-control spending habits and legacy of deficits.

Now on top of those tax hikes, the Liberals are proposing significant changes to the way that businesses are taxed, arguing that companies are using existing tax-planning strategies to avoid higher tax rates.

While the Liberals would have you believe that these changes are about making sure wealthy Canadians are paying their fair share of taxes, the potential impacts are far broader and will undoubtedly make life more difficult for hardworking Canadians and their families.

Here in Atlantic Canada, local businesses are the backbone of our economy and the place where many residents earn their living.

Entrepreneurs work hard, take risks, put in long hours, and make personal sacrifices year round all in the hopes of succeeding and giving their children a better life than they had.

Yet instead of supporting local entrepreneurs, the Liberals are trying to make it harder for them to maintain and grow their businesses.

Conservatives believe that low taxes lead to prosperity and opportunity for everyone and we support policies that reduce government red tape and allow entrepreneurs to create jobs in their communities.

While we fully agree that Canada’s tax system should be fair and equitable for all, we are concerned that the Liberals’ proposed tax changes will discourage young Canadians from starting their own businesses; result in layoffs, fewer working hours, and reduced benefits; and make Canadian businesses uncompetitive and drive away foreign investors.

Here in Atlantic Canada, there is also a real concern that these changes will make it even harder to find a family doctor and result in increased patient wait times.

Despite the fact that we already have a doctor shortage, the Liberals are targeting private-practices and discouraging physicians from practicing in Canada. That’s the last thing we need given our aging population and the needs of rural communities.

It is also very concerning that the Liberals announced these changes during the summer, while many people are on vacation, seemingly to avoid a public debate and proper consultation period. But you have an opportunity to tell the government what you think of their plan.

Until October 2nd you can share your concerns with the Minister of Finance and your local Member of Parliament. Don’t let the Liberals ram through changes that will drive away doctors and negatively impact hardworking local business owners.
