PC leadership forums begin tonight

Trivers, Aylward will take questions from audience in Summerside

The race for PC party leader is starting to kick in to high gear.

The first of four leadership forums with the two candidates for the leadership of the P.E.I. Progressive Conservative party is taking place tonight in Summerside. Rustico-Emerald MLA Brad Trivers and Stratford-Kinlock MLA James Aylward are vying for the position vacant since Rob Lantz resigned after the 2015 election.

“Our leadership candidates have been busy all summer engaging Islanders in traditional and non-traditional ways. They’ve been listening, talking about the need for change and their visions for a better Prince Edward Island,” said Margaret Anne Walsh, president of the PC party. “Our leadership forums

will let Islanders hear directly from Brad and James about the issues that matter to Islanders.”

The first leadership forum will be held at Credit Union Place in Summerside tonight beginning at 7.

The forum will also be streamed online through the P.E.I. PC party Facebook page. Additional leadership forums will be held during the next month in Bloomfield, Charlottetown and Brudenell.

The forums will be open to the public and the public will have an opportunity to ask questions of the two leadership candidates. The public will also have an opportunity to submit questions online.

“We want our leadership process to be open, inclusive and engaging. That’s why we’re having early voting across the Island and by mail-in ballot over an extended time period,” said Walsh. “Our leadership forums will be another step in that engagement with Islanders.”

Party members will vote in advance and learn who their new leader is on Oct. 20 as the Tories forgo a leadership convention.
