Hurricanes bat .750 in weekend soccer matchups
Holland College teams team go 3-1 in season-opening road games
Another Holland College Hurricanes soccer season began this past weekend and the ‘Canes earned three wins out of four games to open the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association 2017 campaign.
The men’s team was 2-0 with a 6-0 win over Dal-AC and 4-1 victory against Crandall.
Meanwhile the ‘Canes women split after a 3-1 besting of Dal-Ac and a 2-1 loss to Crandall.
The 2-0 start puts the men in first place in the ACAA standings ahead of King’s College and Mount Saint Vincent, both 1-0-1.
The women (1-1) sit second behind St. Thomas (1-0-1).
Both Holland College teams hit the road this weekend for matches in Halifax, N.S.
Saturday, the Hurricanes face King’s College at 2 p.m. for the women and 4 p.m. for the men.
Sunday, the ‘Canes tussle with Mount Saint Vincent. Both games are at 2 p.m.
Men Hurricanes 4, Chargers 1
On Sunday the ‘Canes faced a tough Crandall squad and opened the scoring in the 42nd minutes Ibra Sanoh notched his third goal of the season.
But Crandall tied the match at 1-1 just two minutes later on a penalty kick.
Then in the second half, James Briand scored in the 70th minute to give the Hurricanes 2-1 lead. A Harrison Ellison goal in the 83rd minute provided insurance and Briands second goal, this one in extra time, salted away the win.
Hurricanes 6, Rams 0
The men’s Hurricanes scored early and often Saturday in Truro, starting in the third minute when Austin Blades found the back of the net.
Additional first half goals from Briand, Charles Aondoand Sanoh (39’) gave the ‘Canes a 4-0 lead at the break.
In the second half the Hurricanes would score twice more on Briand and Sanoh’s second goal of the game each.
Women
Hurricanes 3, Dal-AC 1 The Hurricanes opened the scoring on Saturday in the ninth minute with a goal from Nicole Ferguson, but the Rams bounced back and tied the game 1-1 in the 21st minute.
Shortly after, Hurricanes goals from Ali Fahie and Sabrina Molnar before the half would give the squad a 3-1 lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
Chargers 2, Hurricanes 1
A slow start on Sunday in Moncton, N.B., caused the women’s ‘Canes to not find their rhythm after Chargers scored just nine minutes in.
The ‘Canes Kendra Craswell tied the game 1-1 in the 16th minute, but Crandall scored five minutes later for a 2-1 edge it maintained through the second half.
