Gallant brothers snap streak

OMD Construction and Consulting no longer rules Acadian Golf tournament

-

It was quite a weekend for Holland College’s James Briand.

The Hurricanes men’s soccer and Antigonish, N.S., native was not only named one of Holland College’s athletes of the week but he was also named one of the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association’s top athletes of the week.

Briand, a second-year winger with the ‘Canes had a pair of offensive games this weekend, scoring four times in back-toback victories.

On Saturday, Briand would score in the first half and again midway through the second, powering the ‘Canes to a 6-0 win over the Rams. He followed it up with a pair of goals in the second half in Sunday’s 4-1 win over the Chargers in Moncton.

Briand is currently in the sport and leisure management program.

Moira Kinney, a second-year striker with the St. Thomas University women’s soccer team, and a native of FlorencevilleBristol, N.B., was the ACAA female athlete of the week.

Soccer player Katherine Drake was also selected as one of the Holland College players of the week.

Drake, a fourth-year centre back with the Hurricanes showed leadership in both games on the weekend as the ‘Canes started their ACAA regular season. Her ability to stay calm and help a young Hurricanes back four was an asset.

In Saturday’s match, a 3-1 victory over the Dal AC Rams, her leadership kept the 2016 leading scorer to no goals while on Sunday, a 2-1 loss to the Crandall Chargers, she led by example in the second half, winning tackle after tackle and moving the ball forward as the ‘Canes pressed for an equalizer.

Drake, a Stratford native, is currently studying in the photography program.

The Hurricanes soccer teams will be back in action this weekend on the road when they face the UKC Blue Devils on Saturday and the MSVU Mystics on Sunday in Halifax.

The ‘Canes hold their 2017 home opener on Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Terry Fox Complex in Cornwall when they host the STU Tommies.

The Gallants team, made up of brothers Andrew, Jeffery, Brian and Edwin, captured the 12th annual Acadian Golf Tournament as Glasgow Hills on the weekend, ending the four-year winning streak of the OMD Construction and Consulting team.

During the tournament on Sunday, the new champs attained a score of 62, which was two points better than their third-place finish last year.

The Nobles team (Nick Arsenault, Paul Cyr, John Arsenault and Marcel Gallant) maintained their second spot with a respectable score of 63.

The CFAs — Dany MacDonald, Martin Allard, Maxime Duguay and Jean-Eudes Duguay — racked up a score of 65 to catch third place.

Even though these three teams and a number of golfers won all kinds of prizes during the tournament, the real winners of the day will be the youth who will be able to participate in the 2018 finals of Les Jeux de l’Acadie in Miramichi, N.-B., thanks in part to funds raised during the tournament. The tournament raised a record profit of $7,500.

For the 12th year in a row, the Evangeline-Central Credit Union was the sporting event’s main sponsor, but about a dozen new hole sponsors came on board this year and were added to the list of regular sponsors.

The number of golfers (75) was a bit lower this year than last year, but those present contributed quite a bit to the cause by purchasing tickets for various draws and lotteries held throughout the day. Participants were challenged to help recruit more players for next year.

Tournament organizers — the P.E.I. Regional Committee of Les Jeux de l’Acadie and Acadian and Francophone Chamber of Commerce of P.E.I. — are extremely pleased with the results of this year’s event.

OTHER PRIZES AND RESULTS

While no one was successful in the hole-in-one competition on Hole 15, organizers presented a consolation prize to Jen-Eudes Duguay, the golfer having gotten closest to the hole.
