Knutsford WI plans Heritage Tea
Local womens group has much to celebrate
Members of the Knutsford Women’s Institute will bring out the china cups, linens and white gloves for their Canada 150 Heritage Tea on Sept. 16.
The tea not only celebrates Canada’s sesquicentennial, but also the latest renovation project at the Institute group’s community centre and the unveiling of the fifth panel outlining the community’s history.
Renovation work, carried out with the assistance of a New Horizons grant, include an exterior ramp to make the main floor of the community centre wheelchair accessible, new windows and door and improvements to the basement.
There will be servings of sweets, sandwiches, Canada 150 cake and, of course, tea, from 2 to 3 and 4 to 5 p.m. There will also be entertainment in an events tent during those hours.
From 3 to 4 p.m. an official opening will be held for the New Horizons project as well as the unveiling of the fifth historical panel.
The Knutsford Women’s Institute will also pay tribute to their longest serving and still very active member, Empress McDowell.
At 98, she’s nine years older than her institute group. McDowell, who faithfully attends and supports WI functions and volunteers three days a week at the Margaret Stewart Ellis longterm care home. Her group will also acknowledge the six lines of five generations in her family.
Tickets to the Canada 150 Heritage Tea are available at ScotiaBank, O’Leary and from Knutsford WI members.
