Good progress on Queens Arms intersection work, says city
A 160-tonne crane is expected to arrive Sunday to assist in the construction project at the Queens Arms intersection in Charlottetown.
The machine will start moving large concrete box sections into a prepped trench on Monday. The project, being done where Capital Drive, North River Road and Lower Malpeque Road meet, is to replace a storm channel, which the City of Charlottetown says must be completed to prevent the road from collapsing.
The work started on Monday and was expected to take two weeks.
The city said Friday it was pleased with the progress made one week into the project.
Contractors have been excavating and the trench was expected to be completed by Friday.
Construction is currently on schedule. The weather has cooperated and it will play a big part in progress and the work scheduled for next week.
The city said traffic has flowed relatively well and detour routes are being used.
The project has compounded queues on streets around the construction area, so changes have been made to normal traffic signal timings in order to clear most lineups with each cycle.
Drivers on detour routes are reminded that those streets are seeing heavier than normal traffic and courtesy is appreciated for those trying to enter or exit at non-signalized intersections and driveways.
The contractor had hoped to keep some sidewalk access open, but now that a major excavation is underway, there will be no pedestrian access through the intersection due to safety concerns.
It is anticipated there will not be pedestrian access at the intersection until the project is almost complete.
Businesses in the area of the intersection have remained open and local traffic has been, and will continue to be, permitted through to those businesses.
