FARMHOUSE BURNS TO THE GROUND
A fire Sunday lasting more than five hours destroys farmhouse on Wynn Road
Firefighters from three departments respond but fire spreads too rapidly to save twostorey structure in Elmwood Sunday evening.
A P.E.I. homeowner suffered a complete loss following a devastating fire at her two-storey farmhouse in Elmwood Sunday evening.
The North River Fire Department, assisted by the Crapaud Fire Department and Charlottetown Station Two, responded at about 6 p.m. to a structure fire on Wynn Road after a neighbour noticed smoke coming from the windows.
North River Fire Chief Anson Grant said they did not know if anyone was in the farmhouse when they arrived at the blazing building.
“The initial report was there was still a person inside the structure, but once we arrived on scene, we determined shortly after that the occupant of the residence was safe and sound at another location,” said Grant.
He said firefighters arrived to heavy smoke and flames billowing out of the windows and eavestrough.
The fire spread rapidly through the older style farmhouse.
“The home has been completely destroyed,” said Grant. “It was well on its way when we got there and it took quite a while to get it under control.”
Firefighters spent about an hour getting the blaze under control. They were on the scene for more than five hours.
The fire appears to have started in the kitchen area of the farmhouse on the main floor, but due to the level of destruction to the farmhouse, the fire marshal’s office is unable to determine the cause of the fire.
The homeowner does have insurance and is staying with friends and family.
